Bahrain could soon witness an influx of workers from Sri Lanka after a temporary ban was lifted. Sri Lankan authorities early last month temporarily suspended housemaids from travelling to Bahrain because of the recent unrest.
The suspension was lifted early this month as the situation is beginning to get back to normal. Sri Lankan Consul General P B Higgoda has told the Gulf Daily News that authorities have already started issuing permits again. There are now one or two workers arriving in Bahrain daily. Before the current period, they had an average of over 30 new workers arriving in Bahrain from Sri Lanka each week. Gulf newspaper reported earlier that a new Sri Lankan Labour Welfare Centre is to be opened later this month.
