Engineers testing SC ride that killed 6-year-old

Apr 8, 2011 9:21:00 AM - thestate.com
A children's train ride in Spartanburg has returned to the tracks for the first time since a crash last month that injured dozens and killed a six-year-old boy.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that the red and gray train known as "Sparkles" was back on the tracks at Cleveland Park Thursday as part of testing to try to find out what caused the crash. Engineers started the train and drove it on several sections of the track.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger is heading up the investigation into the crash. Clevenger says he has hired a team of consultants to analyze the train rails.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is also helping with forensic mapping and speed calculations.

Twenty-seven people were injured and Benji Easler died in the March 19 crash.
