Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has told the foreign media in London that the Government’s endeavour to enable the people to live in freedom in the motherland liberated from the terrorists, has been very successful.
The External Affairs Minister, who is on an official visit to Britain met foreign journalists at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London. He told them that the number displaced by the conflict which stood at 290 thousand had come down to 10 thousand. Only a small area had to be de-mined. The removal of landmines in this area has reached the final stage. LTTE cadres are being rehabilitated under many stages. Some had received the opportunity of pursuing higher studies after sitting state examinations. High Security Zones in Jaffna had been scrapped.
Sri Lanka had succeeded in achieving the second highest economic growth in history after gaining independence. The External Affairs Minister clarified to the foreign media that that Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission to mend the hearts broken by the war is successfully operating. The Minister invited the British business community to be vigilant and exploit the business opportunities available in the island.
