The Charleston community's generosity saved Neka Lewis and her four daughters about a year ago.
The family was living in a motel room after being evicted from their public housing apartment when the oldest girls, Kalyn and Amy, won first and second, respectively, in Charleston County School District's spelling bee.
The girls' determination to succeed in the face of adversity captured Charleston's heart. Donations poured in, and the community offered the family a new home and more than $8,500. Strangers gave food, clothes and books, and they volunteered to help Lewis earn her GED and find a job.
The promising future Lewis saw last year has disappeared, and her four daughters may be the ones who suffer most. Still, the unfolding drama hasn't weakened the girls' resolve to do well.
