Gov. Nikki Haley again rapped a sales tax collection exemption for online retailer Amazon but said she won’t block it if authorized by the Legislature.
“You don’t change tax policy to bring in jobs on the backs of all businesses,” she said after an appearance this morning at the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce. “If they go and get it through (the General Assembly), I won’t stand in the way.”
Lawmakers are divided on whether to provide the favor Amazon wants as part of its plan to open a distribution center near Cayce that would bring in 1,249 jobs by 2013.
Other merchants are campaigning against the exemption as an unfair advantage for a competitor.
But some area business groups call it a small price to pay in exchange for a project estimated to generate $11 million more annually in state and local taxes.
