Officials say thieves targeted the needy when they stole three air conditioners from homes on St. Helena Island.
The Beaufort Gazette reports the units were stolen from three nearly complete Habitat for Humanity houses last week. No arrests have been made.
The air conditioners are valued at about $2,000 each. The thieves apparently target them for aluminum and copper that can be resold.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization that uses volunteers to build simple homes for the needy.
Brenda Dooley with LowCountry Habitat for Humanity says volunteers had been working to reach an April 30 grant deadline to build the new homes.
