Former state Sen. Greg Gregory has won a special election to fill a Senate vacancy created with now-U.S. Rep. Mick Mulvaney's election to Congress.
The State Election Commission says the Lancaster Republican and Builders Supply president won 77 percent of votes cast in Tuesday's special election.
Gregory held the seat for 16 years before retiring in 2008. He entered the race after Lancaster pharmacy owner Hugh Mobley dropped out, citing health reasons.
Gregory said he planned to hit the ground running with a Wednesday morning meeting with state Sen. Wes Hayes of Rock Hill to discuss legislative redistricting after the 2010 U.S. Census.
Democratic candidate Keith Brann won nearly 18 percent of the vote Tuesday. The election results will be certified Friday.
