The people are displaying keen enthusiasm in celebrating the National New Year. Today being the last day of the Old Year, the Colombo City was congested with people engaged in last minute shopping
Even Colombo Fort was crowded with many eager to leave for their hometowns to celebrate the New Year with their family members. Additional trains and buses operated from Colombo to many towns. As such the people did not experience any transport problems. The Army and the Police joined in stepping up security operating mobile patrol services.
When inquiries were made about the use of fire crackers, Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe reminded the public of the dangers caused by the use of fire crackers. He said many of the accidents happen when people decide to throw crackers at friends, send skyrockets horizontally or light firecrackers on their palms. As for the victims, he said both adults and children were equally prone to injury.
In addition to buying fire crackers, many were engaged in purchasing textiles, fruits and sweetmeats. All Liquor shops and bars throughout the country are closed today and tomorrow, according to a Government announcement.
