The entire nation is gripped in festive mood as the vast majority anxiously await the dawn of the New Year. It is the second National New Year the country will be celebrating in an environment of peace and tranquility following the eradication of terrorism. New Year celebrations follow auspicious times calculated by astrology. Traditions are performed according to the auspicious times.

The Punyakalaya will begin at 6.37 tomorrow morning and continue until 7.25 p.m. the same day. It is appropriate to engage in religious observances during this period, after giving up the daily work and partaking of food before 6.37 a.m. The New dawns at 1.01 p.m. tomorrow while the auspicious time for cooking of the first meal for the New Year is at 1.06 p.m. Astrologers state that it is favourable to prepare milk rice with jaggery and ghee, attired in Golden colour and making the hearth facing the North.

The auspicious time to start work for the New Year, indulging in transactions and partaking of ood is at 3.18 p.m. It should also be done attired in golden colour and fcing the North.  The auspicious time for anointing of oil on the head is at 7.41 a.m. on Saturday the 16th. The anointing of oil should be done while facing the South with Bo leaves on the head and Kohomba leaves for the feet. The auspicious time to leave for work is at 6.28 a.m. on the 18th of this month, facing the Northern direction. The auspicious colour is white.
