Nation celebrates another National New Year in a peaceful atmosphere

Another National New Year has dawned. The entire country is gripped in festive mood. This is the second National New Year the country is celebrating in an environment of peace and tranquility since the total eradication of terrorism.

The Punyakalaya dawned at 6.37 this morning. Astrologers also identify this period as the Nonagathe which continued until 7.25 p.m. It is during this period that the people engage in religious observances. Temples and Kovils were full of devotees.

President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa as well as family members also engaged in religious during the Punyakalaya.  They visited the Rankothmalu Vihare at Wage-goda and paid obeisance at the temple. The most eagerly awaited National New Year dawned at 1.01 p.m. The auspicious time for the lighting of the hearth was at 1.06 p.m. As mentioned by astrologers milk rice was prepared with jaggery and ghee, attired in Golden colour and facing the Northern direction. First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa joined in this tradition at the Carlton House in Tangalla and family members assisted her.

The auspicious for partaking of the first meal for the New year was at 3.18 p.m. Ion addition to taking the first meal, transactions were also conducted attired in Golden colour and facing the Northern direction. President Rajapaksa, the pilot who crafted the environment for the entire nation for the partaking of the meal prepared with new rice of a new yield, also joined in this tradition setting an example to the whole country. The President did not forget to perform another tradition that is undertaking transactions for the New Year. He did so by visiting the Bank of Ceylon and People’s Bank branches in Tangalla. The anointing of oil on the head for the New Year will take place on Saturday the 16th at the auspicious time of 7.41 a.m.

As mentioned by astrologers oil anointing should be carried by facing the South with Bo leaves on the Head and Kohombo leaves for the feet and dressed in blue colour. The auspicious time to leave for work is at 6.28 a.m. on the 18th of this month, facing the Northern direction. The auspicious colour is white.
