The possibility of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain could put a damper on one of the major outdoor-event weekends of the year in the Midlands.
The national Storm Prediction Center says theres a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in the Midlands from Friday night through Sunday morning. The last two possibly severe fronts that moved through the state tossed trees onto hundreds of houses April 4-5 and peppered cars and homes with destructive hail April 9.
Even if the thunderstorms fail to pop up, rain is likely. The National Weather Service puts the possibility at 70 percent in the Midlands much of the day Saturday, with up to an inch of rain expected to fall.
Thats bad news for most of the Saturday events Celebrate Freedom Festival, USC baseball, Racers Reunion, Congaree National Parks NatureFest. Of course, as long as the lightning holds off, a little rain might just make the Mud Run even muddier.
UPDATE: Rain cancellations/postponements
State Farmers Market: A petting zoo event at the State Farmers Market has been moved to Sunday from Saturday.
