A mother said she resorted to detective work of her own to prove her son was innocent in a string of break-ins in the Charlotte area.
The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that Diana Allen's son was charged with possession of stolen goods. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Caleb Allen of Huntersville was half of a duo they dubbed "Bonnie and Clyde" who was breaking into upscale homes in the Charlotte area.
But Allen said she never lost faith in her son and launched her own investigation.
She said she believed Charlotte-Mecklenburg police targeted her son because he was a recovering drug addict with a criminal past, and because he drove a red Jeep Cherokee - the vehicle spotted near the scene of the crimes.
Based on the questions investigators asked her son, Allen said she suspected police were looking for drug addicts who sold stolen items to support their habit.
