Oil anointing, one of the last New Year traditions was held throughout the country today.
The auspicious time for the conduct of this tradition was at 7.41 a.m. today. The national ceremony was held under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. Mahanayake of the Sri Rohana Chapter and Chancellor of the Ruhuna University the Ven. Attudawe Sri Rahula Thera anointed oil on the President at the auspicious time. Thereafter the President handed over the title deed of the land adjacent to the Vihara to the Sangha. Members of the Mahasangha and Parliamentarians including Minister Salinda Dissanayake were present.
The traditional oil anointing ceremony organized by ITN was conducted near the Ibbankatuwa tanks in Dambulla.
The Historic Sri Naatha Devala premises in Kandy was the venue of the oil anointing ceremony of the Central Province. Those who joined in this occasion were the Anunayake of the Malwatta Chapter the Ven. Niyangoda Vijithasiri Thera, the Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter the Ven. Galagama Sri Attadassi Thera, Provincial Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa and Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake.
The North Central main ceremony was organized at the Ayurveda Hospital in Anuradhapura. Among the large gathering present was Chief Minister Bertie Premalal Dissanayake
The north Western ceremony was conducted at the historic Paadeniya Rajamaha Vihara in Kurunegala. Governor Tissa Balalla was present.
