A small group of protestors rallied outside the Bank of America tower on Main Street today to draw attention to what they described as the banks failure to pay its fair share in taxes.
The rally, part of a nationwide effort by MoveOn.org to call attention to big companies that pay little or no taxes, drew 15 protestors, whose actions were photographed and chronicled by no fewer than eight photographers and journalists. Protestors held up signs and chanted, "Make them pay! Make them pay!"
At one point, three protestors tried to deliver a handwritten "tax bill" to someone inside the bank tower. A bank security guard told one of the protestors, 71-year old Doug Milliman of Forest Acres: "Give me the daggone thing and get out!"
The security guard took the "tax bill," and a City of Columbia police officer told the protesters to leave the banks property.
"Message not delivered," Milliman said.
