City investigates chlorine leak

Apr 18, 2011 7:02:00 PM - thestate.com
The city of Columbia is investigating the source of a chlorine leak at its water treatment plant that forced the evacuation of the building Monday.

But city officials said late Monday afternoon that the toxic material has been contained to the building and does not pose a threat to the public. The city had chlorine scrubbers running to cleanse the air, utilities director Joey Jaco said.

Thom Berry, a spokesman for the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, said agency emergency response officials had not been contacted by the city for help with the leak.

Chlorine is a caustic gas that can kill people who are exposed to high enough levels. It is used, among other things, to disinfect water and as an ingredient in bleach. The material typically hangs low to the ground when released into the atmosphere.
