Legal action will be instituted against pharmacies issuing medicine without prescriptions. Action will also be taken against pharmacies providing highly priced drugs instead of the medicine recommended by the doctors.
Minister Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to the Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority to enforce the law against such pharmacies. The Drugs Regulatory Authority during the last two years had conducted 400 sudden raids. Pharmacies which issued medicine without prescriptions, sold drugs of low quality and substandard were raided. A report on these raids was handed over to the Minister today. The Minster emphasized that there are reports that certain pharmacies were giving incorrect drugs due to lack of trained pharmacists. As such the Minister stressed the need to hand in maximum punishment to mistakes committed in the sale of drugs.
