A three member committee has been appointed to inquire into irregularities in the Postal Department.
Secretary to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Hemasiri Fernando has appointed the committee on the instructions of Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga. It is tasked with inquiring into malpractices revealed by Postal Trade Unions and the media. The Inquiring Committee is the result of a discussion the Minister and the Ministry Secretary had with Trade Union Leaders on the strikes and demonstrations staged by the Trade Unions. The committee comprised retired Judge C.N. Silva, former Secretary to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affiars S. Virithamulla and former Secretary to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication C. Maliyadda. The Postal Services Ministry said the committee will entertain open evidence and the recording of evidence will take place from the 1st of next month.
