Boeing announces solar plan for SC assembly plant

Apr 19, 2011 11:00:00 AM - thestate.com
Boeing Co. says it will cover the roof of its 787 jet assembly plant in South Carolina with solar panels.

The Seattle-based aircraft maker and South Carolina Electric & Gas announced Tuesday that the Dreamliner plant will operate as a 100 percent renewable energy site.

The panels will be installed and maintained by SCE&G. The panels will provide up to 2.6 megawatts of electrical power for the site - enough to power about 250 homes. SCE&G will provide supplemental power to the plant as needed.

Boeing says it hopes the plant shows it's possible to commit to renewable energy on large-scale projects.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham says Boeing is showing leadership on green energy initiatives and says he hopes that will encourage other businesses to do the same.
