Big turnout for Sorensen funeral

Apr 19, 2011 7:35:00 PM - thestate.com
Tuesday funeral in Columbus, Ohio, for former University of South Carolina president Andrew Sorensen was well-attended, with a sizable delegation from South Carolina.

“The church was packed,” said former Columbia mayor Bob Coble, a close friend and colleague of Sorensen’s, who flew to Ohio on the university plane with the official USC delegation, led by Ppresident Harris Pastides and his wife, Patricia. Others included USC board of trustees chairman Miles Loadholt and board secretary Tommy Stepp, Columbia attorney I.S. Leevy Johnson and S.C. NAACP president Lonnie Randolph.

The hundreds of mourners sang “Eternal Father Strong to Save” and “How Great Thou Art.” Sorensen’s sons, Ben and Aaron, gave eulogies, as did the late president’s sister, Mary Beth Koehler, and his brother, Mark Sorensen. Also speaking was Ohio State University president Gordon Gee. At the time of his death, Sorensen was chief fund-raiser for Ohio State University. He had just finished raising $106 million for student scholarships in less than six months.

Sorensen, 72, was USC president from 2002-08, a life member of the NAACP and former president of the University of Alabama.
