The Chairmanship of the Asian Region of the UN Habitat Commission has accorded to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka will hold the Chairmanship of the
Asian Region for the next two years. Sri Lanka was accorded the Chairmanship at the 23rd session of the Governing Council of the UN Human Settlements Programme held in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. Minister Wimal Weerawansa participated in the session representing Sri Lanka. The Minister at this session underscored the need to reach a common solution to the housing problem in the region. Representatives of Pakistan and India supported this proposal. It is slated to implement a common housing policy for the SAARC region in the future. An idea of holding a Housing Conference of SAARC countries including Sri Lanka was also mooted.
