President of Bangladesh Zillur Rahman has emphasized the need for a collective effort to surmount challenges in the world as well as in the region. He said the socio-economic progress achieved by Sri Lanka under the active and farsighted leadership of President Rajapaksa is an example to the Asian region.
The Bangladesh President expressed these sentiments at a special banquet hosted in honour of his ri Lanka counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s House. He emphasized that Sri Lanka’s leadership is an impetus in the joint effort of making the region free of hunger and poverty. The stand of his Government was to stand up against terrorism in whichever part of the world it is experienced. The President of Bangladesh was optimistic that the proud freedom won by Sri Lanka would lead to regional development.
Giving his views, President Rajapaksa referred to the importance of regional unity to confront natural and human challenges. There should be an opportunity to find solutions for problems of developing countries such as theirs without any persuasion. The President pointed out that it should be emphatically stated to the world that they had the capability of finding home grown solutions to these problems. The Sri Lanka president extended his gratitude to the Government and the people of Bangladesh for acting as a friendly neighbour at times when various opinions were building against Sri Lanka, even in the operations launched to eliminate terrorism.
