A new Android phone app created by Columbia resident David Brinkman turns a walk along the river into a multimedia history lesson.
Unlike the occasional informational signs already on the Three Rivers Greenway, you dont have to stop walking to learn a few lessons. Just listen to the voice in your phone.
And like a hike on these public trails, the app is free.
My motivation is not to make money, said Brinkman, who has links to the apps from his website historysoft.com. But if I put these things out there and people use them enough, maybe Disney will call with an offer and I can retire.
As you head up the hill to the bridge over the start of the Columbia Canal with the downloaded app playing on your phone, a voice starts talking. It tells you the man-made waterway has had multiple uses through the years transportation, power generation, water supply.
