Thirty-four-year-old Lee Dean Azevedo was arrested Wednesday after his three-month-old son was treated for injuries including a fractured skull and swelling and bleeding on the brain.
Sumter County authorities and state child protective services were notified of the possible abuse case Tuesday after the child arrived at Palmetto Health Richland.
When a child has such injuries, its standard procedure to alert authorities, said Lt. Joe Lane of the Sumter County Sheriffs Department .
Azevedo lives on South Lake Cherryvale Road in Sumter with the childs mother, the infant and a three-year-old. Azevedo first took the infant to the Toumey Health Center in Sumter because the child was having trouble breathing, Lane said.
Toumey sent the child to Palmetto Health because of the severity of his injuries. The baby remained on a respirator Wednesday evening, Lane said.
