The pigmy hippos born at the Dehiwala Zoo were named in a public competition last evening (20) and are now on display.
The three cubs born in three instances during the month of January were named Sameera, Hiyara and Hapani. Over 350 contestants took part to name them where a cash prices were distributed. The three pigmy hippos were kept under observation until their health conditions improved as they were weak at birth. The parents of the three pygmy hippos are said to have arrived at the Dehiwala Zoo from China. The naming competition was held under the patronage of Bashwara Senanka, Director General of the Zoological Gardens.
