The government called on the UN not to publish the report submitted by the panel of experts appointed by the UN Secretary General on Sri Lanka.
External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris told a press conference that the publication of the report by the panel of experts or its recommendations acted upon it will do irreparable damage to the country.
He added that the publishing of the report would inflict even greater damage on the UN system than for Sri Lanka.
He said the UN is based on principles and this action compromises on these core values.
According to Peiris, the UN should refrain from any steps that will make the task of reconciliation more difficult.
“What we say to the UN system is let us work together. The UN should reach out to Sri Lanka at a time it is coming out of one of its darkest periods,” he said.
