Vegetable influx in the market

Apr 22, 2011 11:06:49 AM - itnnews.lk

Vegetables are rife. As a result prices in every market have considerably come down.

The prices of low country vegetables at the Pettah market as well as at the Dambulla Economic Centre and markets countrywide have declined to a considerable extent. It has been witnessed how these vegetables including Ladies Fingers and Pumpkin are very cheap. This development is attributed to the high yields received after the New Year vacation.

The consumers said that the prices of vegetable had dipped. They said there were a variety of vegetables available in the market.

Traders pointed out that when compared with the last few weeks, the arrival of vegetable stocks in the market was about a 500 percent increase. At the same time the prices have declined rapidly. They were of the view that there was an increased supply than the demand.

The provision of quality seeds and fertilizer and the interest displayed by farmers to cultivate vegetables is attributed to this situation.

Minister Johnston Fernando said that cultivators have brought vegetables surpassing the demand. This was the reason why 70,000 kilograms of vegetables had to be destroyed. He pointed out that on the instructions of the President they have launched cool storage facilities at the Economic Centres and in producing areas including the North as well as in the South and in the Central Province.
