Many Reservoirs have started overflowing due to the torrential rains experienced in many parts of the island.
Director General of the Irrigation Department G.G.A. Godaliyadda said that of the 60 main Reservoirs in the island more than 15 are overflowing. The sluice gates of the Maha-vilachchiya tank in Anuradhapura has been opened one foot and 7 inches., while two gates of Nuwarawewa have been opened nine inches each. Sluice gates of Basawakkulama and Tisa wewa in the town have been opened six inches each. He said that seven gates of the Rajangana Reservoir have each been opened three feet and about 2500 cubic feet of water was being released to the Kalawewa.
Many tanks in the Kurunegala District are also overflowing. In addition, in the Matala District two tanks are overflowing. Mr. Godaliyadda added that two gates of Lunugamvehera and Weheragala, the two main reservoirs in the Hambantota District have been opened six inches each. He added that many Reservoirs are full to capacity.
