The UNP has today called on the government to honor its pledges given to the working masses at this year’s May Day celebrations.
UNP Spokespersonand parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatilleka told a press conference that the government should take measures to grant the promised Rs. 2,500 salary increment, re-introduce salary increments granted every three years and the payment of Rs. 2.50 to every unit of the cost of living index.
He said the government should not attempt to use the report of the experts panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sri Lanka to overlook the issues faced by the working people.
Karunatilleka added that workers had a right to expect benefits from the government at this year’s May Day as it is the second year thee May Day would be celebrated after the conclusion of the ear against the LTTE.
