Steve Morrison will not endorse anyone in the April 20 runoff for the Columbia mayor?s race.
Morrison, the third-place finisher in the April 6 election, met Monday with finalists Steve Benjamin and Kirkman Finlay. Each man had called after the election to ask for Morrison?s support.
Morrison wrote a letter explaining his decision not to endorse either candidate, saying both had winning qualities. The letter said the decision was a joint one between Morrison and his wife, Gail Morrison.
Morrison explained that he did not have a political machine that could deliver votes to another person. He said his supporters would make independent decisions.
Morrison said he entered the mayor?s race, hoping to overcome party and racial lines, and he urged voters to look beyond those differences in Benjamin and Finlay when voting.
