House rejects Amazon exemption

The drive to bring an Amazon distribution center with 1,249 jobs to the Midlands suffered a major setback late this afternoon, when the House rejected a sales tax exemption the company wanted.
The proposal lost 71-47, amid pressure from other merchants who complained the exemption would give the online retailer an unfair advantage.
A similar proposal is pending in the Senate.
But both sides agree the outcome in the House was a key showdown on the future of the exemption for Amazon.
