Democracy was prevailing in maximum in Jaffna. There is no military rule in the area. These observations were made by Jaffna Government Agent Emelda Sukumar.
Mrs. Sukumar said she strongly rejected allegations made by certain groups that there military rule prevailed in Jaffna. The Jaffna polity is enjoying real freedom to the optimum. Children are attending schools peacefully. All civilians are engaged in their day to day lives without any hindrance. She said that during cultural programmes and special functions organized in Jaffna, the people solicited the security of the forces. The Forces do not fail to respond instantly. The civilians work in full cooperation with the troops.
Mrs. Sukumar pointed out that the support given by the troops for the resettlement of civilians specially in Jaffna and to make it a mine-free zone, is immense. Under such circumstances, she added that no one can say there is military rule in the area. She vehemently rejected this accusation.
