Rain threatens Ratnapura

Apr 28, 2011 10:58:12 AM - itnnews.lk

Several areas in Ratnapura are threatened as a result of the rising waters of the Kalu Ganga due to torrential rain. Heavy rain is also obstructing the movement of traffic on many roads.

The water level of the Kalu Ganga is on the rise following heavy rain experienced in Ratnapura and upper stream areas from early this morning. By 4.00 p.m. today, the water level had rise up to 5.4 metres. The Irrigation Department said this has surpassed the danger level. The people in several areas including Randella, dimiyawa, Millapitiya, Kahawatte, Karannagoda and surrounding areas have been warned to be on alert within the next few hours. Movement of traffic on the Colombo-Ratnapura highway was obstructed near the Museum due to an earth slip. However, the road had been cleared with the mediation of the Municipal Council.

In the meantime, our correspondents reported that many low lying areas have gone under water due to the overflow of the Rakwana River. It is reported that the situation would worsen in the next few hours due to torrential rain.
