The government has announced a Rs. 1 billion increase in revenues earned from the excise tax on liquor in 2009 in comparison to 2008.
Deputy Finance Minister Geethanjana Gunawardena has informed parliament that the revenue earned from liquor sales had increased from Rs. 27.2 billion in 2008 to Rs. 28.2 billion in 2009.
Meanwhile, the revenue earned from cigarettes sales had also increased in 2009 to Rs 2.7 billion from Rs 2.2 billion the previous year.
Responding to an oral question posed by United National Party parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayaka, Gunawardena has said the government had earned Rs 824 million as excise duty on liquor as at October 29, 2010.
