No sign of improvement in weather, despite the decline of water levels of Gin Ganga and Kalu Ganga

Apr 29, 2011 11:14:41 AM - itnnews.lk

Several areas are experiencing torrential rain. Many low lying areas in the Ratnapura and Galle Districts have gone under water. Although the water levels of the Kalu Ganga and Gin Ganga have receded, the flood danger has not eased.

Several areas in the Ratnapura District were threatened with the overflow of Kalu Ganga and subsidiary rivers overflowing. As a result of the inclement weather, Many Rivers including Kalu, We, Kuru, Denawaka, Bambara Botu, Hangamu and Niri Eli reached overflowed. Accordingly, the Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Elapatha, Kiriella, Ayagama, Nivitigala and Pelmadulla Divisional Secretariat Divisions faced threats. There are also reports of damages caused to houses. Our correspondents said that many roads were obstructed due to earth slips. Two deaths are reported from the Ratnapura District. About 15 families have been evacuated due to a landslide at the Kiribathgala mountain. Transport is paralysed in the Klawana, Nivitigala, Ayagama and Rakwana areas. The Meteorological Office of Ratnapura said that the water level of Kalu Ganga which stood at 6.3 metres had receded to 6.1 metres by this afternoon.

In the meantime, the water level of Gin Ganga is also decreasing. Many low lying areas including Nagoda in the Galle District were flooded due to the overflow of the river. Many houses, shops and roads have gone under water. Although water levels of the rivers have gone down, the threat still looms. An immediate programme has been launched to provide relief to the displaced.
