AIS Strangled By The Long Arm Of The Law

Police stopping vehicles bringing students to AIS

Police personnel continue to cause severe harassment to parents and children trying to approach Asian International School situated at Thalakotuwa Gardens – Colombo 5.  Director for the school Ms. Goolbai Gunasekera said that “rude” policemen placed at the entrance to Thalakotuwa Gardens have recently turned abusive even confiscating mobile telephones from some attempting to reach the school.
AIS last year lost a court battle to residents of Thalakotuwa Gardens who were successful in getting an order from court in their favour which banned parents from driving up to the gates of AIS to drop off and pick up their children.  The ban however was conditional allowing for students under five years old to be driven to and from the school gates, while all students over five were required to walk from the entrance to Thalakotuwa Gardens to the school premises. But police personnel stationed at the entrance to Thalakotuwa Gardens have insisted that even visitors attempting to get to the school during school hours must also alight from their vehicle and walk, much to their annoyance and to the embarrassment of school authorities.  In fact, police harassment has even had some parents threatening to remove their children from AIS.
