The President said he wished to express his gratitude to the large gathering of workers who thronged the grounds to proclaim their love and vision for the country. In the past the workers joined in May Day rallies to demand their rights. But he queried as to whey the workers joined in today’s May Day rally. It is on behalf of justice and on behalf of the freedom of the motherland. This rally was being held under one flag and that is the national flag. He sid he had opened the doors of Temple Trees for workers and Trade Union leaders to discuss their rights. He queried as to which Government had summoned Trade Unions before formulating the budget.

The President said he wished to announce with pride that it was only his Government which had done so. He said that he wished to announce with pride that in the entire Asian region, it was his Government which had done a significant service on behalf of the workers. His Government is vested with the responsibility of looking after the workers when they retire. This was the reason why a Pension Scheme was being introduced. The President emphatically stated that no force would be permitted to halt this process. Whatever difficulties they had to face, the President said they would not curtail the rights of workers.
