The government in a bid to control prices of essential commodities is to amend the Consumer Affairs Act (CAA).
Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman Rumy Marzook has said the Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry was taking the necessary steps to introduce the amendments to the Act.
The Act is to be amended in a manner where the prices of essential commodities could be controlled. Currently, the Act provides a mandate to the Authority to control the weight of essential items.
According to Marzook, amending the Act would empower the CAA to control the prices of essential commodities while maintaining its existing control over the weight and measurements.
