The Supreme Court has directed its opinion on the legality of the Government’s new Pensions Bill to the Speaker.
The Government presented the Pensions Bill for employees of the Private Sector and for migrant workers in Parliament recently. The Supreme Court which considered its legality announced today that it would be directed to the Speaker. A group of Trade Union representatives had filed a petition calling on the Court to look into its constitutionality. It ws taken up for consideration by a three judge bench headed by Dr. Shirani Bandaranaike. Giving views on behalf of the Attorney General, Solicitor General Priyasath Dep said the Government has decided to introduce an amendment so that the widow would be entitled to the pension after the death of the pensioner. The Solicitor General also said that action would be initiated to grant the benefits until the demise of person who contributed to this Scheme. Granting permission to implement the related amendments, the Supreme Court announced that it would direct its determination to the Speaker.
