Private bus owners have demanded for bus fare hike from the National Transport Commission (NTC).
The Private Bus Operators Association (PBOA) has requested for a 15% increase in bus fares and also the increase of the minimum bus fare from Rs. 6 to Rs. 8.
PBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne has said the fare hike was necessary due to the increase in diesel prices and maintenance costs.
He says that a failure to increase the bus fares would result in the private bus owners incurring heavy losses.
Meanwhile, Private Transport Minister C.B. Ratnayake has told the media that he was not prepared to consider a revision of bus fares.
He has said the Ministry would decide when to increase the bus fares and not because of demands made by several associations.
