Carey Ann Schuck felt at peace Wednesday as state law enforcement officials commemorated her late husband and two other public safety officers who died on duty last year.
Its nice to still be part of the law enforcement family, she said. Weve gotten more support than I ever imagined.
Her husband, Bill, an Oconee County deputy, died in February 2010 when his patrol car, stuck on a dirt road, suddenly lurched forward and struck him while he was inspecting it.
The couple moved to the Upstate so she could work as an athletic trainer after graduation from the University of South Carolina. He was a police officer in West Columbia from 2007-09 while she attended classes.
We encouraged each other to do what we love to do, she said.
