Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera has emphasized that abuses in Sri Lankan prisons are very low when compared with other countries.
The Minister said that the national percentage of those who had contracted HIV in prisons is very much higher in many countries. But it is fortunate that this is very much low in prisons in Sri Lanka. It is very much lower than one percent. In addition to raising awareness campaigns and treatment the required background should be created to avert such a situation. The Minister pointed out that this was the reason as to why reforms were introduced to Prisons under the leadership of the President.
The Minister was speaking at a workshop in Colombo themed “new Light for Life” to educate prison officials on HIV AIDS. The workshop was held according to a five-year plan on the prevention of AIDS in prisons. A book on the prevention of AIDS was also released. Prisons Commissioner General V. R. Silva and Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala were among those present.
