The Government has decided to grant the fertilizer subsidy for all crops. The Government’s decision will be effective from midnight today.
The decision has been taken on the advice of President Rajapaksa. Accordingly the fertilizer subsidy for paddy cultivation will be continuously provided. A 50 kilo bag of fertilizer will be 350 rupees. The cost of a 50 kilo bag of non-mixed fertilizer for all other crops will be 1200 rupees. A 50 kilo bag of mixed fertilizer is due to given at a concessionary rate of 1300 rupees. The Government has announced that the fertilizer could be purchased from any state or private sector marketing outlet, without filling any application forms. Hitherto a 50 kilo bag of fertilizer was sold in the market between 3500 and 4000 rupees. Finance Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera clarified the implementation strategy of this decision at a meeting at the Ministry. The Government incurs an annual expenditure of 40 Billion Rupees in view of the fertilizer subsidy.
