A 21-year-old Columbia man and his 20-year-old girlfriend have been arrested and accused of conducting about 20 car break-ins in Lexington County.
Marshall Levi Darden Roop, of Crescent Lane, and Shannon Mechelle Powers, of Sid Sites Road, Irmo, were brought to the Lexington County Detention Center following their 4 a.m. arrest on charges of tampering with a motor vehicle on Magnolia Street in the Magnolia Key neighborhood.
The Lexington County Sheriff's Dept. said deputy Doug Edmonson purposefully patrolled Magnolia Street because of reports of suspicious activity. Around 1:45 a.m., the deputy saw a suspicious white Honda Acura and turned off his headlights to observe. He said he watched Roop walking toward the car. When the deputy turned on his headlights, Roop hurried into the car, which Powers owns and where she was behind the wheel, and attempted to cover a bag he was carrying.
Edmonson said he approached and questioned Roop about his activity, and saw several wallets and navigation devices inside the car. When searched later, the book bag was found to be carrying more navigation aids, cellphones, power cords, wallets and gloves. The devices were linked to car break-ins in the Magnolia Key and Timberlake neighborhoods.
Powers was arrested on charges of accessory before the fact and after the fact to tampering with a motor vehicle, the sheriff's department said.
