An Independent Television Network journalist has come under attack by a Police Officer who had not clearly identified his obligations and responsibilities.
Journalist Niroshan Premaratne of ITN was subject to this arbitrary assault from a Police Officer at the Panadura Police Station. Some Officers of the Motor Traffic Unit of the Panadura Division apprehended him on charges of driving his vehicle disobeying Police orders. Instead of carrying out the necessary investigations after being brought to the Panadura Police Station, the Officer of the Motor Traffic Unit had brutally assaulted Niroshan Premaratne. After the assault, he was admitted to the Panadura Hospital and thereafter transferred to the Colombo South Hospital. He has sustained injuries on his head and face as a result of the assault.
Police Media Spokesman Preshantha Jayakody said that a complaint had been lodged with the Police on the attack. He said the IGP had given a special order with regard to the incident. Accordingly a special team headed by a Police Superintendent is investigating. The Police Spokesman specially mentioned that if an anti-disciplinary activity had taken place, the Department will not hesitate to take action against any officer immaterial of his position.
It is the responsibility of the Police to institute dire action against such low grade officers who make attempts to paralyse the dedication of the Police Department including the Police Chief to make a reality the President’s vision of providing a public friendly service by building a people’s friendly Police Service.
Every citizen has the right to abstain from being taken into custody arbitrarily and being penalized. The innocent public cannot expect justice if the Police Department comprises low grade officers who are not aware of safeguarding the right of a media personality who discharges a public social service.
