Fort Jackson's forestry division is doing a controlled burn on 4,000 acres of the basic training base in Columbia.
The State of Columbia reported that the fort is conducting the burn on Sunday and warning residents about expected large columns of smoke coming from the 52,000-acre base.
The burn will help reduce potential fuel for an out-of-control wildfire. It also helps stimulate the germination of some desirable forest trees.
The burn started around 10 a.m.
