Commuters: Leave early, drive slow

A line of thunderstorms packaged with strong winds, lots of lightning and pounding rain swept through the Midlands early this morning, leaving a trail of downed trees and disabled traffic signals.
At 6 a.m., the S.C. Highway Patrol was reporting more than 40 collisions, traffic light malfunctions or trees blocking roadways in Kershaw, Lexington and Richland counties.

Most of those, 9,322, were in Richland County. Another 1,394 were in Lexington County. Charleston County customers reported 1,743 outages, Orangeburg County customers reported 932 and Fairfield County customers reported 822.
