Richland County authorities are investigating the death May 10 of a 36-year-old man held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. An autopsy performed Wednesday was not able to determine a cause of death, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said in a statement.
The unidentified man, arrested for drinking alcohol in public, had been in the custody about 12 hours when he was found leaning against his bunk on the floor of his cell at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
According to a statement from the coroner's office, he was "highly intoxicated" when he was booked at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. After he told booking officers he was suicidal, he was placed in a special holding unit and checked every five minutes.
The inmate is not being identified pending notification of next of kin, Watts said.
