A 53-year-old Ridgeway man is being held without bail by Richland County authorities after a third arrest this year, accused of scamming thousands of dollars from elderly residents seeking handyman services.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott called Willie Lee Able a "career criminal scam artist" noting that he was arrested in February and twice in April for stealing more than $31,000 from elderly residents of Richland and Lexington Counties.
Able would ride through neighborhoods, scope out yards and homes in need of repair, convince residents he could do the work and demand payment up front, Lott said.
"Able does not complete the work and leaves the victims with what he believes is a civil complaint and not a criminal act," Lott said. "Able found out that preying on citizens is criminal," Lott said in a statement.
After the latest arrest at the end of April, Able's bonds were revoked. He is being held in Richland County.
