Richland County buys cops portable print scanners

The Richland County Sheriff's Office's newest tool to fight crime lets deputies instantly check fingerprints without having to bring someone back to the station.
Sheriff Leon Lott said Thursday he bought 27 of the portable fingerprint devices using money forfeited by criminals.
Lott says the scanners are connected to a database at the Richland County jail, which compares the fingerprint to prints connected with active warrants in the county. If there is a match, the officer is instantly notified.
The unit does not store the fingerprint.
The sheriff says his office is the first in South Carolina to use the new devices.
