Ten Fort Jackson drill sergeants ate lunch Thursday with U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates during an unannounced visit by Gates to the Army training base. The sergeants were given an hour-long open forum to talk about challenges and opportunities they face.
Gates also spent several hours observing recruits in basic combat training. He watched those new troops participate in live-fire exercises and conduct combat operations in an urban environment. He thanked the soldiers for their service. Gates will retire next month; CIA director Leon Panetta has been nominated to replace him.
I am extremely proud to have had Secretary Gates here today and for him to see the outstanding work our noncommissioned officers accomplish on a daily basis, said Maj. Gen. James Milano, Fort Jacksons commander.Noelle Phillips
